From your software post (window 1) it seems that the software is at fault.
From your hardware post (window 2) your hard drive seems OK.

What I would do is to a full hard drive erase with DBAN, DBAN will take along time depending on the size of your drive. What I do when I use DBAN is to select an erase procedure and just wait until it clocks up to one or three percent then just reboot your computer take out the disk and then do a full shutdown to get everything out of the memory then boot up your computer with your operating system disk. When you do it this way you should get a clean bill of health from the software side of things.

Hope this answered your question.

"What does this all mean?"

It means that you had a bad spot on your hard disk. fsck fixed the problem, possibly by assigning an alternate block.

"Is my hard disk failing?"

Probably not. If it is failing you will get the error again and again in the future.

You currently have 6 bad sectors pending reallocation (attribute 197). Those sectors will cause an I/O error if the OS tries to read them. The next time they are written, they will either be tested and found good or will be reallocated to spare sectors. The Bad Block HOWTO has instructions for identifying the file (if any) associated with a bad sector and how to force that sector to be reallocated.

The 'Load_Cycle_Count' is worrisome, but mainly indicates old age. Run a SMART long test:
Code:

smartctl -t long /dev/sda
Wait for it to finish, and post the results:
Code:

smartctl -a /dev/sda

Sounds good.

Then I do not need to start making backups

But that is the os hdd, and I need the data on it

It likely is failing, so backup and get a new one. There are bad blocks on the drive, and the attributes don't look good.

So, I am still using the same harddrive

Good news: It is still working fine, and the issue of this thread did not appear again (afair I opened the thread when the computer failed to boot due a disk issue).

Bad news: It is making a lot more noise in the last weeks and there are much more SMART errors. Getting nervous that it is failing now :

Hi,

You have made backups?

BeniBela2 03-20-2015 05:15 PM

I am making quarterly or occasionally monthly backups, so the last one is a little old...

Will try to make them more often, but dd is so very slow

At least I have a backup of the smart output now

rknichols 03-20-2015 05:24 PM

I'm just seeing the one sector pending reallocation. Until that sector gets remapped, it's going to cause an error every time something tries to read it. The error log indicates LBA 100655702. That might not be exact (the drive almost certainly reads more than a single sector at a time), but I can try to help you track that down if you want.

Hmmm, I see that the smartmontools "Bad Block HOWTO" page I usually reference is gone. Oh well, here's another.
[EDIT]Found the page on smartmontools.org. Here's a link.

The first thing I'd need to see is the output from "fdisk -lu /dev/sda" to identify which partition contains the failing LBA.

Like this?

Code:

root@hostname:/home/benito# fdisk -lu /dev/sda

That should be
Code:

(100655702 - 63)*512/4096 = 12581954.875
and then
Code:

debugfs: icheck 12581954

New noises are not a good sign. SMART does not say that it is failing, but I would keep backups and keep monitoring it closely. You may want to run a SMART long test, but it will probably fail due to bad blocks.
