I am considering replacing my massive easy-bake oven CRT with a new LCD monitor, but want nothing to do with HDCP, or hardware DRM. Many monitors have this virus, I mean technology, built in and some do not. I do not watch any DVD content or use my PC for any multimedia except audio, so could really care less about Blu-ray, HD-DVD, yada, yada, yada....
Bottom line, does anyone have an HDCP enabled monitor hooked up to your Linux box with the DVI cable? Is anything affected by the HDCP technology on the DVI port in normal (desktop) operations? Thanks in advance.
I too would like to know if others have HDCP LCDs working via a DVI cable.
I have a new LG 22 inch widescreen monitor which has the HDCP hardware "virus", I mean capability, and it's hooked up to my nvidia Geforce 6800/OC with a DVI cable. I have no issues running this set up, but I do not watch videos or anything else like that. I do play lot of video games, and they work fine, also you-tube videos seem to work fine as well. I'm running Fedora 7, by the way. Hope this helps.
So you can actually get output to your monitor with a Nvidia 6800? I dont get anything at all with my 7800 GT to my Samsung 931 BW LCD via a DVI-D cable. I read that Nvidia cards didnt support hdcp until the 7950 so I am curious how you got yours working.

Just plugged it in and it works fine. It is my understanding that HDCP does not come into play unless all hardware pieces in the chain support it. My video card does not, so I am assuming this is why it just works. Can anyone else confirm this? I am using the proprietary Nvidia driver also, can't remember which version at the moment. I am refusing to buy another video card unless it does NOT support HDCP, but I may be out of luck. The fact HDCP is included at the hardware level is, in my opinion, a crime against consumers because it makes the assumption we are all thieves. Sorry, got a bit of a rant out!
