hda ext3 corrupt

Hello all,
I had some problems recently with my box. When it is on over night it usually doesn't work anymore in the morning. All I get is the desktop or a black screen.
Today it finally wouldn't boot anymore - filesystem corrupt.
I got:
/dev/hda1 fat
/dev/hda2 ext3 debian
/dev/hda3 swap
/dev/hda5 ext2 data
/dev/hda6 ext2 gentoo

It was running debian with all filesystems mounted.Deb wouldn't boot anymore but gentoo did just fine.Fixed the partition from there.
Now I got data missing on hda2 - don't know how much yet - working on that.
Anyway - you guys figure I have a problem with this drive or something else is screwed up?
Can't get anything out of the logs the box was doing nothing at all according to the logs.

How olds the drive and what make is it???

Is it Scsi or IDE????

crashmeister 08-20-2002 06:13 AM

It's about 6 month old IDE and calls itself samsung. No idea who manufactures it.
Got about 85 meg's in lost+found now.

It sounds as if either your Debian install was a bit dodgy or the drive may be playing up especially if you were not doing anything when it went pear shaped.

If it is the drive itself youre still covered by warranty arent you????

If so recover what data you can and take it back to where you bought it

You could also try reformatting the offending partition/partitions and reinstalling debian

Warranty should be ok for a year.I guess I'll do some nasty benchmarking on the thing for about 12hrs. or so.
If it survives go ahead and repartion.

Post back with results and what youre going to do i.e. repartition or take back

Hmm - wonder if your power is fluctuating? If your voltages get too low, screwy things could definitely happen. Also with spikes. I got a line filter for my system and was very surprised that is usually just barely within spec or just below.

And I live in the DFW metroplex.

I got a stabiliser in there - they wouldn't even sell a box without it here.At least not with warranty.
In the meantime I found a couple of real strange lines in the root-terminal.

Well - took a while. Had to burn some backups.I did benchmark the drive for 12 hours and nothing went wrong.
I'll go ahead and put a little install with reisser on there and see what happens.

Change of plan.I did run hd-tests with Cerberus and that screwed the hd up within 30 minutes - really good tool if you need to destroy something!Works also for Cpu's and other stuff.
