Question HD problems on new install with sarge

I have a PC with two HD's in it. One is a 40gig IDE and the other is a 250GIG SATA. The install see's both of them. i install the os on the 40gig and use the 250gig mount point under /home. when i restart after the new install it gives me an fsck error on /dev/sda1 saying can't find it or adress unavailable. i try and run fsck on /dev/sda1 and it gives me the same error. so when i actually get logged into the system i try and mount /dev/sda1 and it works fine. any idea's?

thanks,

-Derek
