Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

hardware diagnostic Live CD

I am after a Live CD which would be able to detect faulty hardware parts on i386 machines. I know of memtest on Knoppix but that only tests RAM and nothing else. I need a CD which would test NICs, HDD, RAM, CPU, Fan etc. I know I can enable hardware monitoring on Linux and Unix but most of the computers I'm trying to test are running XP.

Thanks.

Well, HDDs can be tested with smartmontools. RAM and CPU are both effectively checked by memtest. And I suppose a NIC could be checked with ping.

What specific types of test would you like performed?

I like to test faulty hardware parts - HDD, NIC, CPU, RAM. The CD will be run by end users and not *nix geeks. So the user would pop-in the CD, click-click-point-point and the CD would do all the test for them and tell them what's faulty.

Thanks.

Ultimate boot CD has diagnostic and benchmark tools. There also appears to be an option of customizing its knoppix-based version though I don't have much experience with it myself. Check out http://www.ultimatebootcd.com
