Hard driving failing then working then failing again : SMART says it is OK

having issues with a 750 GB WD 2.5 internal HDD used as an external USB hdd.

sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. when it did smartclt said it was OK

I was having problems setting permissions on it, even in root. I unplugged it then plugged it back in now it is no longer showing as a partitioned hard drive, Gparted shows it as OK, but I ran attempt data rescue with it and it gave me a [quote]Failed creating read-only view - an error occurred while creating the read-only view. Either the file system cannot be mounted (like swap) or there are inconsistencies or errors in the file system.

blkid and dmesg | tail
Code:

/dev/sdd: PTUUID="bb2d0e8b" PTTYPE="dos"

userx@Voided.1 & ~ >> $sudo dmesg | tail

how to run badblock and does that even mark bad sectors to keep them from being used so one can still use what good parts are left on HDD if that is all that is wrong with it?

I have a small 30 gig zif ide hard drive that acts kinda like that. I have to smack it
to jar the bearings loose so it will work.

Problem is intermittent and smartctl plus other disk usage tools in my parted magic usb drive show nothing wrong with it. Problem seems to me just happens to the hard drive sticks and just does not work till you slap it to loosen up what ever is stuck.

Edit: Oh. My drive is a Toshiba.

lmao -- slap it silly - show it who's boss.
and yep that is what mine is a Toshiba 750GB

but doesn't slapping it constitute Hardware abuse punishable under The ISTE Standards Committee?

Well. To trouble shoot mine. When it quit.

I booted up my parted magic usb drive. Of course. Since the drive is not spinning.
With the power button hit and bios is told to to boot from usb.
It is not seen in parted magic as a working drive.

So I back slap that atom netbook backside. Hit the power button. The zif drive is now working. Then I try the parted magic usb again. It sees it now.

Do the tests. No bad sectors found or repairs needed. Why not? Because the hardware has been ran till the wheels are falling off. I would invest in another
zif 30 gig drive. But this winter is motorcycle part priority time of the year.

So Bikes before computers on these coming winter months for me. I have other working laptops and netbooks to tide me over.

As far as hardware abuse. My motorcycles also don't like how I treat them either.
I ride them hard and put them up wet.
