Hard drive weirdness

I have a 160GB hard drive(/dev/hde). When I use fdisk, I can create the partition and then write the partition table. Then when I try to apply the filesystem to /dev/hde1, it fails saying it can't write to disc. Do you think my hard drive is dead? The ATA100 controller still picks it up on bootup and I can fdisk it, but just not format it.

Ok, I put the drive into a windows machine and created a partition just fine. I deleted that NTFS partition and re-installed the drive into my linux server. Everything worked fine. The only thing I can think of is that the IDE cable must not have been completely pushed in.
