Hard Drive Making Too Much Noise!
Hi,
I'm Having a problem with my hard drive...umm after installing SuSE Linux on my hard drive that also contains Xp Home Edition my har drive started making a lot of noise...it never has made this much noise and it's quite annoying...it started right after i installed SuSE 9.1...any help would be appreciated! *Thx in Advance* |
Have you recently changed modded/ upgraded anything inside your case it could just be you've moved something a bit without noticing and its vibrating from a moving part. Whats the spec of your harddrive? Older ones do tend to make more noise from my experience.

Actually no i haven't added anything else to the computer. This all started right after i installed SuSE. I rebooted into the SuSE OS and all of a sudden my hard drive is making noise. BTW this hard drive is actually quite new i purchased this computer veryu recently so it's quite new.

I'm have had the same type or problem. After starting my computer (dual boot Dell, primary HD WinXP; Secondary HD SUSE 9.1), both HD will start chattering for about a minute, then stop and everything is then ok. This doesn't happen when in XP. No error messages. Now today, it didn't do it.

i jst suggest to repartition your harddrive and just put linux..also i do not suggest suse 9.1 because they cut down a lot of useful packages. try red hat 9..or debian

i think that in linux the harddrive is on (spinning) all the time. in windows it stops when not in use.

Its probably just updatedb running in the background.

It could be the fans. Open up the case and locate the fans. Stop the fans for a few seconds. If the sound goes away, then its the fans. If it is not the fans, I suggest replacing the hard drive.

Stay away from RH9. If you want to use something like RH9, then use Fedora Core. Quote:

do not use fedora core or suse stay with redhat because of its stablitity and the number of packages included with this great os. the only bad thing about red hat is that it is pretty slow when launching gui APPLICATIONS. ANYWAY TRY USING THE COMMAND LINE MORE OFTEN.

i truly hate fedora core because it seems like they want u to buy red hat 9 after you find out wat a peice of crap fedora is.

Most likely you just have a rogue process that keeps the HDD active run "ksysguard" to find out if it is a rogue process and kill off the process that should quiet your HDD down a bit.
