Hard drive dying?

I think my hard drive may be dying a slow death. Windows won't boot, and Linux takes about get to the login screen. what's a good utility to test the drive with (Maxtor 200gb SATA)?

I can't get the utilities from Maxtor to work, apparently the controller chipset on my main board isn't supported. I did reinstall Linux on a whim just to see what would happen, and linux is zippy quick again! Now if I could windows to even boot that would be bonus. I can't even get it to reinstall (setup hangs at starting windows).
