hard disk is running slow

hi everyone,
my hard disk speed is really slow. the actual reading from 'fio' is as shown in the attached image.

my system is detailed below:
motherboard: gigabyte ga-ma785gt-ud3h (north bridge=785g + south bridge=sb710)
processor: amd athlon 2 x2 (model no. 240)
OS: fedora 13
hard disk: western digital 640G green (WD6400AARS)
SATA mode: ahci
partitions of the hard disk: 200M boot - 40G root (ext4) - 4G swap - the rest is not mounted to any of the system folders.

what could possibly be wrong?
i have spent a week now trying to figure out what is wrong, but with no luck!!
please do help me out here.
thanks

I can't see the image but did this happen when you installed F13 or after?

kdehairy 06-02-2010 03:58 PM

this is a new computer. i first installed fedora 12. the problem was there. i then installed fedora 13 and the problem persists.
about the image. if you click on it. it will open in its real size.
what do think this problem may be?!

Our firewall usually blocks all those images so I never try. It does get past so I see it.

How about using other hard drive diags too. Get a ultimate boot cd and try some of the tests.

I'd look to bios first. Swap cables to drive or get a new high quality cable.

If this is a newish hard drive I read about some issue where the format is off. It was taking two or three blocks to move normal data block. I think is was on the green drives. There is a way to correct it.

i searched for that format problem you mentioned (advanced format drive). it seems to be it. you can search for the "advanced format drive" in google to know more about it.
i'm still trying to fix it. but at least i now know what the hell is happening.
thank you jefro so much.. really
