Hard disk failure, how to salvage?
 
Hello everyone,

On a computer I manage for my parents, I had once installed linux for them, set up gallery software so they could share their photo's, and gave the box its weekly share of software updates. Never any problems.

Until now, that is. It randomly shutted down. I come around, check it out and after closely monitoring, I find the following (dmesg):

I listened for a moment, heard soft ticks coming from the computer, and a sound as if the hard disk spun down and tried to increase it's RPM again. First thing that I thought was: SHUT DOWN. I didn't even bother to do things the clean way, but just cut the power, since I once read that any more succeeding use of the drive might damage it further, and it sounded like a mechanical crash.

Now, the pretty same old story comes... Backing up was never deemed necessary, because it 'were just pictures' when they started... but the collection has well grown over 6000 pictures, which has suddenly become rather.. valuable. (I really wish I had pushed a bit more to tell them to consider some kind of backups on another medium, and the few backups I made are on the same drive).

What is the best way for me to continue? Is this per chance salvagable through linux and read only mounting? Or should I consider contacting a company that salvages stuff from broken down harddisks? If so, what would you think reasonable prices would be?

Tons of questions, I know... but I'd be making some people very unhappy if this went wrong.

I have had some success saving data from bad drives. If the sound just started, there is a chance that you can put it in another PC, boot it up and copy the stuff ASAP. Sometimes you can get all of it and sometime some of it. It might take a couple tries.

On the thing with a data recovery company. I hear that it is expensive, but I have never used one.

Thanks, I managed to get the data off by mounting read only. Everything went fine first try, to my own surprise even, I had expected tons of trouble.
