thanks for that, and as a matter of fact i have spent time reasearching.
just a shame some people wont freely and helpfully give out things that they have found. but then again some people are nicer than others!!!!!
what? was that an insult?
everyone on LQ.org does just that.. offers their time and help freely, otherwise they wouldnt have registered.
i said you should research it yourself because all i did was go to yahoo and search for 'HAMR56 linux' and it was one of the 1st 5 results. if you did research it, you would have found that.
if it wasnt an insult, then, yw
sorry mate, got bit hyped up. but i did do some researchin yesterday on google but for some reason fount nothing. but once again thanks for your time and help. i shall go off and try out this driver. i pray to god it works hehehe.
Im new to linux ubuntu and i need to install this HAMR56 modem driver for my modem to work but i dont know how to install the driver. i have read the readme file many times over but i have still no idea how to install the driver. Please would it be possible for someone to tell me how to install it,
What driver? What format (tar.gz, rpm, etc?)? Where did you take your driver from? What have you tried so far, do you end into an error or something? What is the README says you should do that you don't understand?
As you probably notice, Linux isn't point and click, we will need more details if you want help. I can't guess all these informations.
Unless some people here has the very same driver on the very same machine and wish to write you a step by step tutorial (i.e. this mean very very few people), you better maximize your chance in giving all the details you can so people without this exact modem/drivers could help you out too.
Generally there are two common ways to install software: manually, or by using a package tool (such as apt-get, rpm, and so forth). The manual installation is often a 5 step process, and typically is used by people who prefer using the command line interface (aka CLI). An example:
Code:
tar -zxvf <package>.tar.gz -- unpacks the tarball and creates a new directory
cd <package> -- puts you into that new directory
./configure -- runs the configuration script
make -- builds the executable
make install - installs executable into the appropriate directory
Many distros however have tools that handle these steps for you, and so the user only needs to enter a few simple commands, and all the work is more or less hidden from view. There are a variety of articles that compare those installation tools and which provide examples of the specific commands.
In any event, as Half Elf mentioned, it would be very helpful to have a better understanding of the steps you have performed during your previous installation attempts, what any error or system messages were that might have been displayed, and a clearer picture of where you running into the problem. Good luck with it -- J.W.
No - once you locate the package, just download it and install it using the package manager that's appropriate for your distro (or install it manually) -- J.W.
