Gtx 550 ti and nouveau free driver compatibility

Hi everyone,
I have tried a lot of distros in order to explore more and more ,I found this

1-distros boot without any problems like : Debian ,linux mint,Solydx and all available resolution are detected well ,even after installing the close driver.
2-distors need to add for exemple "apci=off" in order to reach the desktop but the resolution is limited and I must install Nvidia drivers to get the good resolution like : Slackware, Salix.

this means that the open driver is not compatible with my Gtx 550 ti or the problem came from the used kernel ?
Need I to change my hardware for best compatibility ?

another problem wich is very strange using Manjaro , on screen boot you can chose between free driver or close driver :
1-using closed driver all goes as good as it must be.
2-using the free driver I can reach the desktop as it is live session but when I want to isntall or mount a ext4 I get this error
" Failed to mount "sys"
Error mounting /dev/sda7 at /run/media/manjaro/sys: Command-line `mount -t "ext4" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid" "/dev/sda7" "/run/media/manjaro/sys"' exited with non-zero exit status 32:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4' "

even after delete and new repartition same problem , is there any link between the free driver for gpu and hdd ?

forgive my english ,sorry for a long and a lot of questions , want to understand about it
plz any suggestions will be welcome
have a nice day and thank you very much

Hi:

I'm not sure if there is a link between the free driver for the gpu and the hdd or not.

Some drivers are permanently built into the kernel w/o being encapsulated as a module.

I have learned that if the kernel list's 2 different drivers for the same device it can cause a device not to work if the drivers are conflicting or the wrong driver is loaded first.

Most modules are device drivers but not all.
ASAIK the module for helping the kernel understand the EXT 4 file system doesn't do anything device related.

Since you switched to Slackware:
Are you still getting the " Failed to mount "sys" error?

We have several members that are running Slackware and have more experience than I do with it. Sorry, I am not running Slackware, I'm still reading the Slackware documentation.

Would you like me to ask a member with Slackware experience to join your thread?

Nouveau works, but it's very featureless compared to the Nvidia OEM binary driver. Regardless of whatever people will say about the politics of the proprietary drivers for Nvidia, they are the recommended official drivers.

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti should work with Nouveau, but I would highly recommend installing the Nvidia proprietary driver for best results.

This should help-

On Slackware64 14, LibreOffice dialogs were unusably rendered using the default nouveau driver; fixed by installing the nvidia proprietary driver.

hi and sorry I m late to answer all who tried to help me ,
first thank so much

since I switched to Slackware no problems at all to mount any partitions , I still think there is a relation between the free driver and the Hdd ...
by the way enough reading docs about Salckware and let start the installation ; what are waiting for ,hard at start but after you will love it
Good luck and thank you very much

after installing Slackware , the free driver allow to reach the desktop with less resolutions , so I installed Nvidia driver i had some errors during installtion can't remember I think " Unable to determine the architecture of lib or libegl " something like that , but i think no big problems since it works
thank you
