Grub Error +New Harddrive
 

I recieved a thought to be broken harddrive at school today and was going to try it out on my own system to see if I had any luck. The motherboard itself recognizes the harddrive as it should be, 20 GB Fujitsu. When trying to boot up, Grub just stalls saying GRUB when it usually goes onto Grub Boot Stage 2. If I unplug the harddrive Grub boots up fine. Is there something I have to add the the GRUB.CONF before I can install the Harddrive? The harddrive has Win2k NT on it. If I boot up off of a Fedora Core 2 disc it also sees the harddrive and would allow me to install onto it. In the bootloader section it does see Windows XP on one of my harddrives and doesn't see my current Linux install.

My Questions are: Do I need to edit the GRUB.CONF ahead of time?
Is the harddrive bad as though?
Any ways to test the harddrive? (besides making it boot up w/out grub)

Just make the Oringinal hard disk as master and the new HDD

as a slave.

This is generally done with your Jumper settings on the HDD.

When you add a new disk no config needs to be made to grub unless you want to boot to a diff OS (installed on that HDD) from grub.

It sounds like you are putting the new drive where the old drive was. If that is the case, when you first start to boot and grub looks for /boot, it isn't there, at least not where it was anyway.

You should be able to put in the new drive and then boot the Redhat CD and enter the rescue mode. I am not familiar with the steps, don't use Redhat, but point grub to the new drive for /boot and the grub files. From what I have read it is pretty easy to redo the bootloader in Redhat.

It should work fine after that. If you are doing what I think you are doing.

edit: left out the part about booting the "CD". Sort of have to clarify a bit. Read bottom of sig for reasons. :cry:

The master and slave settings should be correct unless I am mistaken, as in the BIOS it has my WD 160GB as Master, which it was before, and the new drive Fujitsu 20GB as slave. And then the SATA Seagate 60GB Drive doens't need master or slave from what I understand...

The jumpers are both set to cable select, so should I physically set them to master and slave?

And the bootloader thing, I will try it thisweekend when I have the time if the jumper settings don't help. Thanks for the input.
