Graphics crash after switching PC to newer model

I used to have a P3 700Mhz PC but now I upgraded it to a 2.4Ghz PC. Now my problem is that when I run some graphics intensive programs in KDE, X crashes.

I'm using Slackware 13.

I have identified my device via lspci as:

Code:

00:02:0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)
I even modified my xorg.conf file used by X and added a videoram line to the proper section, but when I run X and check the log, it states videoram is ignored :(

Now I can retrigger the crash by loading Open Office 2.3 Writer and loading and moving a picture a few times (about 720x480 pixels).

Each time X crashes, I always see this line in my dmesg:

Code:

drm:i915_get_vblank_counter *ERROR* trying to get vblank count for disabled pipe 1
The problematic computer has 512MB ram yet it can run Firefox 45. It is a Compaq EVO.

I tried the exact same thing on my older Dell Latitude which has an ATI Radeon adapter and I get no problems with it. It makes me think maybe I need a patch for the intel video card on the problematic computer. The sad truth is the video card is not removable since the desktop is not a tower.

Anyone know how I can fix this problem without replacing the entire slackware distro?

I'm all for not junking stuff just because it's old, but you're running a 19 year old video graphics on a 10 year old OS, so you got to make a few allowances. I very much doubt if intel or slackware still support any of that stuff. Intel were not serious about graphics at that stage anyhow. I gather you've shoved a newer cpu into some old laptop and want to do stuff.

Given that you want to do stuff, there are a few things you can do.
  • I would install a large swap file or partition - over 1G.
  • Go to slackware mirror, and go back in time to 13.0; find the directories: patches; extras; updates; Particularly in updates, install or upgrade anything relevant anything relevant.
  • I would also install the vesa and/or framebuffer video drivers as they may work better.
  • Search 2nd hand sites like ebay.com for memory matching your pc's memory spec, and buy it if you can. you can't buy that stuff new any more.
  • I doubt if you have libreoffice, you would have openoffice unless it's a recent version of libreoffice. If you have libreoffice get ram. If you can live with Abiword, use that instead.
  • See if there's a better driver for your card from intel.
  • Remember you have an antique, with no relevant security fixes, no modern software, and keep your head low online. Hackers would eat that up if they saw you.

Come back with more details, and how you get on. Pastebin your Xorg.0.log if you still need help.

Or to put it more bluntly - you gotta be kidding !!!.
KDE on a 512M P3 ?. You're lucky you got this long out of it. I ran Fedora on a P3 till quite recently, but only as my mail client because I was too lazy to migrate off it. Office suites are pigs, but maybe abiword might pass.

Sheesh. I run all sorts of old junk, but it's time you moved on. I recently tried MX-19 but it failed partitioning (twice), so I turfed it. Bodhi on the same machine AMD seems pretty good.
