Unhappy Graphics card or something else broken?

Summary: display shows strange behaviour since today. Please see screen-shot as attachment. The timing couldn't be worse.

Q: Is it by any chance NOT the graphics card? What should I try / test?

I am on Ubuntu-9.10 x86_64, intel core duo, GPU: GeForce 7600

Thanks!

Lightbulb resolved

Thanks, Prayag! This would have been a good link if the problem had turned out being on Linux' end.

I should mention, after my first post I discovered that even the BIOS logo had some graphics disturbance, which then looked like the issue cannot be Linux.

So, in my case, as it turned out (sometimes we just have to face reality) it was the graphics card. Meanwhile I have put in a new low-end model (nvidia GeForce 8400 GS), and my machine got back to normal, without the smallest hick-up.

So, people out there, if you ever see a screen like mine, there is a big chance you must start looking for your wallet.

Not quite. I got the same thing with an intel card, and the solution was:

However, it seems that you had an nvidia card, and I've never had this happen with an nvidia card. Are you sure it wasn't overheating ?

Hi TexMex,

I have to admit your screen-shot really does show the same display errors. So, for some people a xorg.conf tweaking might do the trick.

But I doubt it would have helped in my case, as all the problems immediately showed (no chance of overheating). Also, my graphics card was fine for many months with the same configuration, and from one day to the next it wasn't.

But the BIOS logo was broken too. Since the latter is shown at the very start of booting, before we touch any Linux, it convinced me it had to be the card.

Cheers!
