First find out what chipset that USB modem has. Absolutely ALL "software configuration" I have seen for USB GPRS/3G modems so far (at least the modems I've used) has been 100% nonsense. It's all crapware for WinDuhs and does nothing useful; as far as I can tell the sole purpose is to keep users ignorant about the settings. As long as the modem does not need a firmware loader, and the controller chip has a Linux driver to expose the (usually emulated) serial port interface, you should be able to set up using pppd and chat.
