Give the DVD a break!

Will anyone support my fight against noise pollution?

I am using a fairly recent DVD drive (NEC-DVD_RW ND-3550A at least 16xspeed). I also use multiple movie players all of which are based on xine.
Now the DVD is always spinning at max rpm, whatever the movie. Imagine the noise!!!

There is a setting in the xine options >>media>>'audio_cd.drive_slowdown' Whatever parameter I set there its not changing anything with my DVD. Sounds logical because it refers to audio, not video. BUT THERE IS NO VIDEO DVD SLOWDOWN switch!

(UltraDMA is turned ON, the DVD device is called hda1 and also linked are the device names 'cdrom, dvd, dvdrecorder' etc... (the hd is on SATA)

Please could someone help me making this quiet?

perhaps hdparm can do it

Quote:

-E set cd-rom drive speed
so hdparm -E 4 /dev/cdrom

Hmmm, this doesn't seem to work. Good idea though, I had not thought of this at all. Perhaps that's what xine is trying to do in the background as well.
Thanks!
