Gigabyte GeForce GT 610 Ubuntu compatibilty

Hello,

I want to get a Geforce gt 610 and I was wondering if it is Linux Compatible. Does it work well with Ubuntu 12.04 which I will be using? Thanks for the help.

I have gotten an answer from Quidsup on Youtube and I will post it here,

Quote:

It'll work fine with Ubuntu.
Im using a GT640 in Ubuntu 12.04 with XBMC and managing to watch 1080P vids and bitstreaming Dolby TrueHD surround sound.

However it won't work with the Nvidia drivers that Ubuntu supply, so you'll need to add the X.Org repository to upgrade them.

Heres a tutorial vid on how to add the X.Org repo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtPAJ9BR1W8

Might also help to upgrade the kernel:

400W is more than sufficent
So it works for anybody wondering. Thanks to quidsup for helping me out with that (his vids are awesome, check them out) :)

GT 610 is just a rebranded GT 520.

GT 520 will run with the nVidia drivers in 12.04 without the hassle and minor risk of adding PPAs.

Not out of the box you need to download the drivers i.e. NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.53 which are readily available online [http://www.nvidia.com/content/Driver...&type=GeForce] BUT the installation of the drivers is (for me) the hard part. If you know what you're doing it's easy but I'm relatively new to Linux so I have my new GEFORCE GT-610 Graphics Card sitting in it's box and the drivers sitting in their folder but that's as far as I have progressed.
It's times like this that I miss MS Windows but I won't give up. Eventually I'll find a tutorial that's written with newbies in mind. That's the problem with anything like Linux, those who are experienced have forgotten what it's like to be new to it all and they either leave out crucial steps in the process or they use jargon which is useless to a newbie.
I use Ubuntu 12.04 and it's great except for times like this.

It is very easy to install the NVidia drivers in Ubuntu. Just open Additional Drivers and just install the driver. Also you still need to install drivers in Windows. Most of the time it will not work and the only time you don't need it is probably for Intel graphics. I have an APU and it definitely did not work out of the box in Windows. It did however work out of the box in Ubuntu. After installing the AMD drivers through Additional Drivers I got it up to full speed. On Windows, the graphics did not work out of the box in Windows. It did not display the correct resolution. I had to install drivers from the CD. In Ubuntu, there's really nothing to it when it comes to installing drivers. Don't download the drivers from the NVidia website, install the drivers from the Ubuntu repositories(through Additional Drivers). Downloading the drivers from NVidia means that you have to install them manually which can be a pain, but Ubuntu does it for you.

A lot of Linux tutorials are very straight forward and easy to understand. However there are some that are intended for advanced users. If you are posting on a forum, just make sure to include that you are a newbie.
