OK. So here's the deal. Before installing, I used mobo graphics and had 1024x768 (I'm doing this from memory, so I may be off, IE: 1204x800... can't remember the exact screen res secondary number).

Now, with this new IMPROVED!?!? graphics accel card, the best I can do is 800x640!?! Even though this is a tri-boot system (Vista, XP-Pro, RHEL4), I'll rip the card out and throw it in the garbage before I continue to use it for Linux. Yes, the level of frustration is that high.

As to my UNIX knowledge level: I've worked (code developer, UNIX SA, SAN SA) on mostly HP-UX systems since 1986, so I'm far from new at this. I'm very familiar w/conf files, cmd line, vi/awk/ed, init run levels and so on. I can't say that I'm truly impressed with RHEL, but from my years of experience, when you're working w/PC's, you end up playing system integrator and right now, RHEL seems to be at the same stage of development as MSWFW 3.11 was 30 years ago when it comes to 3rd party cards.

Is anyone else using this card and experiencing similar difficulties?

Sorry for the verbosity of this thread starter message. But I thought it best to begin w/a good foundation.

What drivers are you using ? I would try the proprietary nvidia drivers for such a high-end card.

Days before I posted here, I went to

I vi'd the inittab file to set the init default to 3 instead of 5 before running the shell script w/embedded, compressed file(s) and then executed from the cmd line.

The point I'm at now is that the system comes up (only) using the generic card and display and will only do 800x640, which is not acceptable. Without a solution, I'd be better off ripping the card out, smashing it to bits and using the mobo graphics.

Any other thoughts? I was hoping that someone on this site might have experienced similar issues with this card... but I don't believe it's hi-end. At $25 (after rebate), I think the industry is merely trying to sell it off because it's so lo-end and/or old. The pity is, it seems to work just fine on MSWin... Although I can't tell any real diffs quality-wise, IE: graphics not more colorfully brilliant or crisp, but the screen does "paint" much more quickly, so display speed seems to be considerably enhanced.

For the proprietary driver follow the package manager strictly

How did you configure your display ? Have you tried 'nvidia-settings' ? Is that where it will not allow you to go higher than that resolution ?

What monitor are you using ?

You can try nouveau, but it's hard to install, so be prepared. Check if you distro has a package.
