Can you mark this thread as "Solved", not sure how as I have not started a thread. Because the information in this post may come in handy for others.
I tried also to connect my laptop to my wireless ap from command line using those commands I posted in post #10, never was able to connect. Eventually I went the route specified in Debian wiki which is to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file and add the information. My router is just for testing as my current location does not have high speed internet connection, only the most best connection, dialup, as such the essid and key are not confidential, my wireless device is eth1.
Below is what I added to the interfaces file:

wireless-essid Tbone
wireless-key s:fordf150stepside
Then I ran this command as root to connect after saving the changes in /etc/network/interfaces file:
dhclient eth1
