Getting the built-in webcam to work on an Asus X83Vb-X2 with Ubuntu 9.04

Hello everyone,

As mentioned in the subject, I'm having trouble with the webcam on my laptop. This is a full-sized laptop, not one of the Eee models. I'm not entirely sure what the model or chipset of the webcam is, as there doesn't seem to be much documentation available (as far as I know, this is Asus' first foray into the laptop market in the US).

I previously had the camera working just fine in Windows Vista, so I know the hardware is just fine. I have tried several programs to get the device working, and some (Cheese, for example) are able to get the green light next to the camera to turn on. I've tried running a number of programs as both the normal user and as root, but I don't seem to be able to get the camera to output video. I didn't see any drivers on the Asus site.

Is anyone able to lend a hand with this? I'm moving out of the country in a month, and would really love to be able to keep in touch with my family and friends over skype or something similar.

Please let me know if you need any further details, I'd be happy to provide them.

Thank you very much,
Sean

EDIT: In programs like Cheese, the webcam seems to be detected as "USB2.0 UVC PC Camera (/dev/video0)". I imagine it's a good sign that video0 is available.

http://www.sidux.com/index.php?modul...ag=Webcamlinks

go to the bottom and see what your ids are...then google

or go back up to searchable hcl site....but it can be out of date

2) basically you have a uvc compliant webcam or you don't.

if you do lsmod must show your disros version of uvcvideo module.

a number of non-compliants use the gspca module but read the section on software not having having caught up with the kernel development.

3) if you unsure post the contents of commands

Code:

lsusb

lsmod | grep snd

lsmod | grep usb

and we can give you better ideas

4) if you have some linux ...hard to tell from post count....you need modules for usb and for the cam....then you need the software to work with the cam module...then you need to maybe tweak the software to use the appropiate sound devices as I use desktop mic in not the cams.
