Getting S/PDIF (digital optical) out to work?

I've got an Abit AT7 motherboard with an S/PDIF output and a reciever with S/PDIF input. I have made this setup work well with Windows XP--and the sound chip is supported in Linux as well. However, I cannot get any audio output through the digital optical output with Linux.

I am running Fedora Core 1, and the sound chip is a Realtek ALC650 controller. Fedora has decided to use the following modules to enable sound:

via82cxxx_audio 24056 1 (autoclean)
ac97_codec 17064 0 (autoclean) [via82cxxx_audio]
uart401 8356 0 (autoclean) [via82cxxx_audio]
sound 73300 0 (autoclean) [via82cxxx_audio uart401]
soundcore 6500 4 (autoclean) [via82cxxx_audio sound]

What do I need to do to get this to work?

Thanks!
