not seen it before, but i'd guess that you have a viewport defined that is smaller that 1024 high. edit XF86Config and check the viewport setting if there is one. if not, add one like
Okay, its going, but now I have a new problem. The display just doesn't want to fill up the screen. There's 2 big black bars down either sides (slightly different sizes 1 us about 1cm, the other is about half an inch). My Desktop icons and whatnot spill off to the side, and whenever i try to adjust the centering of the monitor (via the monitor buttons), iy just disapears at that point as if it was the end of the monitors viewable area (which is isn't because i can see the end, and its a difference color of black.
i'd suggest xvidtune if I thought it would actually help. And i do. So try xvidtune to move the screen positioning around within the xserver itself. These movements work totally independently to the hardware level controls you have, and if you manage to get the position right, hit "show" and that'll dump a relevant modeline to console. you'll then need to paste that output into your X config file, normally XF86Config. then restart X.
