I had another look through dmesg but found nothing more illuminating unfortunately. Read something quite interesting yesterday, and that is apparently network devices do not corrospond to /dev/ files (seems they are files!), and so PPP devices like mine get named ppp0, ppp1 or whatever. The same would be true for the ethernet. Admittedly I still tried physically setting my modem at ttyS0 + ttyS1, sure that it had previously connected through a /dev/ttyX in SimplyMepis - It didn't work of course; Still...
Seems like a good idea to bed this whole sorry saga, unless you know of something else I might try that seems pretty conclusive, but more especially because I am at least getting online (albeit badly) with a second modem:

Oh! That link you pointed me to was actually the one I was referring to when I said I had seen somebody else getting a wildly different outcome to me with
zaptel... start, seems he was trying to configure/load.
