Getting HP Scanjet 3800 to work under linux?

Dear all,
my machine is running Suse 10.1 - all fine with that. Now I got a HP Scanjet 3800, which is unsupported under linux. I got this info from the sane homepage.

I tried to get the thing to work with wine, but no good until now.

The second thing I tried was to go via qemu and Win98SE, but the scanner would only work if it was running under linux before. So no good there, also.

My question is: how do I get the scanner to work under linux? How long will it take until the scanner is supported under sane; that means is it worth the wait?

Would I need to install Win98SE and run the scanner under Win? I am a bit reluctant to install Win98SE, because I would need to change all the partitioning of my harddisk. Also, I don't like to have Win installed - I like linux better =)

Any feedback is very appreciated.

Best,
Knut

Knut

I did not see anything special in the specs of this scanner to motivate anyone to write drivers for it. There may be drivers tomorrow or never. Someplace on the sane web page I think they list a mailing list. Get on it and ask is about the best way to find out. Depending on how complex the driver is, I have heard that beer bribery works. With linux it is usually better to look and see if something is supported BEFORE you buy.
