getting HP deskjet 3940 to work with Suse 10.0

Hi

I am using Suse 10.0.

As my old Epson printer broke, I spent ages trying to find a printer that would work. HP Deskjet 3940 was recommended.

It arrived this morning, I connected it up without the computer, it printed out it's test page.

I then connected it up to the computer and switched it on. I then switched on my computer. After booting up it told me it had found new hardware. I believe I followed all the instructions to configure the printer correctly. I tried the test button, but it printed one line of gobbledigook and then paper feed lots of pages. So I believe the computer is talking to the printer.

I then tried typing a few words in Open Office and I got several pages with just a few characters down the right hand side.

I came here and tried http://localhost:631/ as per one of the threads. However, when I clicked on administration it asked for cups id and password. I don't know what these are.

Grateful, for any suggestions. As you can see I am a step by step person, so I won't be offended if you state the obvious.

Thank you.

Hi

Some further investigation.
I went into YaST2 and got
unable to retrieve the remote source description
ERROR (media: connection failed)
[couldn't resolve host'packman.rsync.zmi.at']

So I clicked on skip refresh.

In the YaST2 package Groups I found
hplip 0.9.4-4
lplip-lpijs 0.9.4-4

and

foomatic filters 3.0.2-4 3.0.2-4.2

I also went into I think print manager and found this.

Name: deskjet 5900 series
Description: HP deskjet 5900 series
Location: USB printer on //5940?serial CN661Z0TQ04KF
Status: Paused: Unable to open USB device "usb//5940? serial=
CN66K1Z0TQ04KF": No such device

Sorry Everyone, made a mistake

Please accept my apologies, see:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...9176&highlight

I actually purchased a HP Deskjet 5940 which is listed as 'perfectly' For some reason by the time the printer turned up, I had mixed up the numbers.

So looking at http://localhost:631
Someone suggested I use lppasswd and look at the man page.

For us newbies: (I'm using Suse 10.0)
I opened a terminal
menu>system>terminal>Gnome

su> my root password.
man lppasswd. Which told me about the command. My normal computer name and password is very simple. The password does not contain any numbers, but my root password is quite tough. So I used an online username and password, as it required some numbers in the password.

lppasswd -a username
Then it asks for the password, and then it asks for it again.

Then when I went to http://localhost:631 I was able to answer the username and password question and it let me in, although they bear no relevance to any other username or password on my computer.

I configured the printer, as advised (at linux printing) I used Deskjet 990C when it asked me as Deskjet 5940 was not listed.

I had been asked to created a simple text file.

In terminal if you type gedit, it brings up a simple editor.

I typed hello world and clicked on file and saved it as text.tst

In terminal I then typed lp test.txt
The file printed fine. So I am sorted.
