Ok, I tried a slightly different google search and found a solution. I'm afraid at
least in Ubuntu 9.04 your methods didn't work but reading around, it seems there is at least a dozen ways. So I got it working one way.
When the GDM starts, type ctrl-alt-F1 to drop you into a command line.
Login normally.
type 'sudo invoke-rc.d gdm stop'
Install the new video driver:
sudo ./[videodrivername].run
Then type 'sudo invoke-rc.d gdm start'
it'll put you back in the GDM
From there, your on your own.
Thanks for the help anyway
