Unhappy Gentoo joystick problems

I have this Sidewinder Gamepad that was working fine last night. I was emerging some packages when I saw that there was a new version of Portage, so I fetched it. I saw that it edited numerous configuration files, but that didn't bother me until I rebooted. My modules and startup scripts were all messed up, and I had to edit them. But even after doing a modprobe joydev, my gamepad doesn't work, it worked fine before the Portage upgrade. Also, my USB stick stopped working, even after a modprobe usb-storage

PS: To be specific, joydev loads on boot, but there's no /dev/js*, and no program sees one. I don't get any message when plugging it or my USB stick in when looking at dmesg, even though they worked fine before.
