Generic USB audio device - no speaker output

Generic USB audio device - not working. Kernel 2.6.14

I have been using a USB IP phone (Arvel Skype phone) to provide better performance than the inbuilt audio on my laptop. Since upgrading to kernel 2.6.14.2 and subsequently 2.6.14.5 the USB audio is not working. The system recognises the devices - all the alsa controls are visible.

Changes to kernel 2.6.14 caused this. See kernel archives - Problem with usb-audio introduced between 2.6.13 and 2.6.14-rc1. Still looking for a patch/solution.

This problem is fixed with Kernel 2.6.15 and USB audio works with kernels < 2.6.14.
Removed the verbosity from the original post as it is fixed. Hopefully this will be useful info for someone.
