Geforce vs. Ati?

I haven't tried messing around too much w/ 3D in Linux in a while, so I wanted to check before I went and started buying hw updates for my computer: Nvidia cards still work ridiculously better than ATI cards w/ Linux? I know that my last ATI card was horrendous to even try to get working.

I think that the general opinion is that NVIDIA driver support is much better than ATI for Linux systems. My GeForce 4 Ti 4200 works fine on SuSE 9.2.

I had an ATI card, a 9500 which softmodded to a 9700 that played Half Life 2 well in Windows, but could barely manage the lowest resolutions running under Cedega.

I eventually took the plunge and bought a Nvidia card so that I wouldn't be reliant on Windows, and the experience is so much better! I bought a 6600GT, and while Windows performance/quality is still better in every case, games like counterstrike run smoothly.

As for the choice between them, you're right, Nvidia is still the only option imo.

That's definitely what I thought. Just wanted to make sure. Looking at a GeForce 6600 myself. Maybe someday ATI will get on the ball, until then, I don't think they'll be getting all that much business from people that actually like Linux.
