Geforce Ti 4200

Hi , I have a Geforce Ti 4200 64 meg video card and I want to know if it is working correctly in redhat 9. How can I check that this is the case? I can see my GUI and have tried to play the games that come with redhat but they seem very slow. I have had a look at nvidia's website and see they have a driver for linux called NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run is this something I should download and install or not? Currently my video card is recognised as a generic. Any help would be appreciated.

You will want to dl the drivers from the nvidia website. Chances are now that you are using either the nv driver, or the vesa driver.

After you dl the nvidia driver, open up a console, switch to root, and type: init 3

This will kill your X and dump you at a text prompt. login as root, cd to the directory you saved the nvidia driver to, and run:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run

This will walk you through the installer to install the driver.

after you installed the driver you have 2 options. either edit the XF86Config file by hand, or in rh9.

If you want to do it in rh9, at your prompt type: init 5

This will put you back at your gui login screen. once there, you can change your display properties, then log out and back in (this should get you going).

You will know if the nvidia driver is loaded because the default setting for the splash screen is to show it. So if you see an Nvidia splash screen, you *should* be good to go.

hope this helps.
