you must download nvidia driver for linux at nvidia.com
after you got it (a file that have extention .run), run it in text mode (DO NOT run it on graphical mode), if you still in graphical mode type this command in terminal: telinit 3
you will directly goes to text mode
login as root
cange directory to where you save the driver
run it by : ./NIVIDIA-driver-installer-***.run (this is not the real name of the driver -- just run the driver)
the installer will goes automatically
then you must edit XF86Config(or something like this) in /etc directory (to edit you can use your favourite editor -- i use mcedit from mc)
NVIDIA also give you complete README documentation about how to configure your xf86config, find it at /usr/share/doc
need another help??

thanks for your help.

One thing though, how can i get into text mode. When linux boots up, it trys to go right into graphical mode and i dont know how to get into text mode to do these things.

I tried ctrl + alt + F2 but that wouldn't work. It had a blank screen with a _ on it. But i could not type or enter any commands.

ok boot into the console, and post the error that appears in the /var/log/xfree86.0.log file
also make sure in the bios you have assign irq to vga enabled, and PnP aware OS (could be termed different) disabled...
double check the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and make sure you made the appropriate changes, and additions....
start with that and see if you get anywheres...but make sure you don't boot into X with the generic drivers because that log file will get overwritten, so make sure you try to boot with the "nvidia" driver to make the error happen and then when it does, reboot into text mode and type something like cp /var/log/xfree86.0.log /home/USER to copy the file that shows the errors to your home directory then re-edit the xf86config file back to using the "nv" driver, and come back here and post what the errors in the file say
NOTE: lines will start with (EE) that have errors and are usually located at the bottom, but also note that some may occur elsewhere in the file...
NOTE2: if you have another computer nearby you don't need to do all this as you can just boot into text mode and display the xfree86.0.log file on screen and use your other computer (if any) to type the error...

I dont think you understand my problem...

I can't get to the console, or text mode or anything.

It doesn't work, when it trys to go into X the monitor turns off, and i cant do anything. Is there some way to get in text mode using the CD? Or another way?

Right now i have not even loaded the new drivers, i cant do that unless i get into text mode, and i cant get into it. That's whats holding me back from that.. and then after i get into text mode i can instsall the new drivers and hopefully edit the Xconfig file right.

glad you got it working, and just outta curiosity, did you have to do anything special, or was it something you screwed up when trying to install ?

and just to note i did understand, i just thought you would have realized that if you can't get in, then your going to need a rescue disk/cd....

Actaully i didn't need a rescue cd or anything...

In GRUB to choose which OS i wanted, i edited the command line, or whatever it's called, im not sure. and put a 3 on the end of the kernal line.

THen that booted into text mode, and i insatlled the driver, then edtied the XF86config file like i was supposed to and restarted. Then it worked fine. and is working fine now! Thanks again.
