garbled sound with SigmaTel AC97, alsa, 1Ghz Athlon, Fedora Core 3

I'm experiencing audio problems. The following games play slow and/or garbled sound: tuxracer, holotz castle, "Beneath A Steel Sky" on scummvm, neverball, and powermanga. In contrast, audio from mplayer and xmms sounds great.

Anyone have any tips for things to try or how to start investigating what might lead to better sound quality?

Here is some hopefully helpful information:

Seems like the culprit was SDL not using ALSA.

Fix was to add this to my environment:
Code:
SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa
And all is well!
