Question FX 5600 and xserver freezes

I just got myself a FX 5600 from MSI - pretty neat gfx

Now, I just compiled my kernel (2.4.22) and installed the driveres. No problems. KDM starts up, nVidia's logo comes up. GREAT! I log in, test my gfx using a GL screen saver. It works perfectly.
Now I start mozilla, and the xserver freezes. The sound continues, I can login using SSH, but my xserver is totally dead. But also just starting different applications may cause the xserver to stall...

Does anybody have any ideas? Or have anybody tried this?

I use the newest nvidia-drivers (44.96). The card has not been overclocked neither the CPU. Also I use xfree86 4.2.1.1 (upgraded by Debian sid).
