Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question Fullscreen games very slow with Nvidia TNT2

Hi all,

I use the nv driver for nvidia cards provided by debian. X works fine, but all my fullscreen games work like bugs... I installed a thing called nvidia kernel of something similar from my debian cds, but still no improvement. Then i looked at my apt list if i hadn't installed anything regarding OpenGL. These packages were few, but most installed. But i hadn't any Mesa package installed...

(I) If I would download the card driver from nvidia for linux, wouldthis change my problem?
(II) Should i install the Mesa packages?

Thanks!

I ) It will probably help
II) You probably already have it.

Don't use nvidia kernel from your debian CD they are probably quite old, go get the latest one on nvidia.com.
How have you "installed" it? Have you done any change to your X config file (xorg.conf or xf86config, I don't know if debian switched to xorg yet)? If you haven't it's just normal that you don't see any improvement, you have the driver but haven't told your system to use this one instead of "nv". Just changing "nv" to "nvidia" should make it, if the installation went fine.
