fujitsu laptop display crazy after X shuts down

hi,

i have a fujitsu laptop with intel 852/855 graphics. before i describe the problem, i want to describe somethine: when i go into the BIOS settings, under video, there's this thing called "compensated." if i enable it, then when booting (both linux and win xp) and when running linux without X, i can use up the full screen. if i disable "compensated," then the size of the screen is smaller--there are black unusable areas around the usable area.

ok, now on to the problem. so the system has just finished booting. i log in. do startx into blackbox or kde. then i either shut down X (which returns to the console) or reboot/halt (which shows the kernel messages like "sending all processes the TERM signal").

now, if "compensated" is disabled, then there are tiny white horizontal lines across the sreen. if "compensated" is enabled, then i can only see a few lines of text at the top of the screen going crazy, jumping all over--basically i know it's text, but i can't read it.

this happens with both slack 9.1 and 10. however, it doesn't happen with mandrake 10 or linux from scratch 5.1. so i think it must be a slack thing. i try to run XF86Config, but it doesn't exist.

does any one have the same problem or know how to fix it? i'm desperate after searching everywhere for an answer.

thanks.

Sounds quite messy, first off, what's the video card?

/sbin/lspci

Cheers,

Finegan

hi,
the Intel 852 chipset is the video card, right?
anyway, i think i fixed that problem by downloading and building xfree 4.3. but now the problem is it can't find libXinerama.so.1.
here is the output of lspci:
