Fujifilm DPC-R1: it doesn't sound good

First, the problem: I'm trying to install, mount, and use a Fujifilm Image Memory Card Reader DCP-R1 (a USB device), and I keep hitting roadblocks. All the basic suggestions I've heard and read, I've tried and I get nothing. I'm hoping someone knows something about this, because I tried doing a google search and came up with basically nothing.

I looked for it in my Hardware Browser, and it shows up . . . under System devices . . . as Yamaichi Electronics Co.,Ltd. USB SmartMedia Adaptor . . . driver:unknown

Second, the requested information so I can actually hope for some help.

results of uname -r:
2.4.22-1.2199.nptl

distro:
RedHat something or other

results of /sbin/lsusb:
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0584:0008 RATOC System, Inc.

I tried the command dmesg both with and without the reader plugged in and the difference sounds fatal:

hub.c: connect-debounce failed, port 1 disabled
hub.c: new USB device 00:1d.0-1, assigned address 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x584/0x8) is not claimed by any active driver.

As I'm a complete newbie to all of this, I have no idea what any of this really means, but this is what I've got for now. I hope that someone out there has some idea about this or I out of options. Thanks for anything help anyone can give.
