woooooow hardware overload !

im not a coplete newb with hardware, im semi-comfotable with FSB's Clock Speeds, etc etc (once someone has explained why 400fsb realy means 200fsb )

but now im finding myself confused with the difference between GeForge FX and GeForce 4 Ti..

I thought that the GeForge 4's were being replaced with GeForce FX's ( i basically thought Nvidia deviced the Name "FX" was more exciting than "5")

but googleing is telling me some GeForce 4 ti's are bettwr than some Geforce FX's

This is reeealy quite funny...
i have an old machine with a dead ATI Rage128 graphics card.

i origonally intended to replace it, but when i say how cheap new cards were, i decided to get a new card... but the old motherboard is only a AGPx2... so i thought, if im speinding a little bit of cash on new Graphics... i night aswell get a new motherboard..and rather thn spending £50 on an okay motherboard... why not get a decent one.... but then the new ones dont support Pentium 2's.. so i decided to get a new CPU..

so from origonaly intending to spend 20 on a new graphics card...ive been caught up in things like "why spend 50, when 60 will get one twice as fast.... and why spend 60 when 70 will buy one 4 times as fast. !!!!

it seems the more money you spend, the better value for money you get...

now im gonna end up with a brand new super computer.. in a 6 year old case, with a dirty brown keyboard.. .. lol

buy the motherboard, CPU and RAM together as a single upgrade
Always the best way to go in my opinion. Get the whole job done at once, get the best value, and the least hassle. Also, this ensures the longest time lapse between upgrades (more time to save money and more time for the new technologies to come along).

As for the GeForce FX series VGA's, just be sure to look at all the specs of each card and compare. That's where the answer lies. In my opinion, both series are in the same class, running side by side performance-wise, and it just so happens that they are made by the same company.

That's right, I've rarely seen kits sold as a package of MB/CPU/RAM but that doesn't mean you can't go buy all 3 of them together at the same shop, or at least for the same upgrade. It is kind of a shame that places don't do that too, you either have to know what will mix and buy everything seperate or buy a 'barebones' system that comes with the crappiest sound/network/modem they could stuff in it.

Another note for the vidcard, for AGP all the speeds are compatable; That is you could run an 8x AGP card in a 1x AGP board and vice versa, it will run at the slower speed but you can at least buy it to replace a bad one and not have to upgrade when you replace the board.

Another reason to buy a board with 8X AGP.

About buying CPU, RAM, and Mobo all at the same time, sorry if we made it seem like you could buy those as a package deal, we just meant all together at once as one upgrade, instead of one at a time over a period of time. You can, however, find mobo+cpu in many places. Tiger Direct has great deals on that type of package. I am not positive if they ship to the UK or not, but you should definitely check it out. Good deals on AMD, too.

If it would make you feel comfortable, after you decide on what you are going to buy, you can post your parts back into this thread before purchasing and we would be more than happy to verify that you won't have any compatibility problems, and even further that each part will complement each other to get the best performance for your money. By that, I mean that there will be the smallest "bottleneck effect" present in your system so none of your parts put a sacrificial speed limit on the others.
