Question framebuffer on i855GM resolution prob

I have compiled framebuffer support in the kernel (once VESA and once I830)
Both don't seem to get me to a resolution that is acceptable (NOT EVEN TO 640x480!). This is probably because I have a laptop and I neet the 855patch to run X.

Is there anyway to have framebuffer support?

thx for any help. Geert.
