Formatting external drives in ext4

I was thinking about reformatting my thumbdrives and external HDs from NTFS or FAT32 over to ext4. Anyone know if this could potentially cause any problems? They won't be used on a win machine.

For external Hardrive it would be OK. You might wear out the pendrives though running a journaling file system though early.

Just from what I have read on the web though. /etc/fstab may have to be edited for ext4 as well maybe. I stick with Fat32 for simplicity reasons.
