formating without losing some data

my drive is as follow i will format my system but i do not want to lose my /home/ directory its too big i cant back up is there a way to do it?

you won't lose your /home drive as long as you have it as a seperate partition. I don't know what /dev/shm is, but you could use Gnu Parted to resize the /hda2 (root) and then with the freespace create a new fs, onto which you then copy the home dir. then during install, just make sure it doesnt mess with that particular partition. (ie. use it for swap or something)

/hda2 is all / and my /home directory is on it so i have to resize my existing hda2 int to 2 partions without losing data on it

sounds like a call for gnu parted, partition magic or the like :)

Or, if the box was networked, tar it and store it on another box
while repartitioning...
