formating a verbatim usb 16 gig

I have been trying to have access and format a verbatim 16 gig usb drive. Gparted will not be able to access the drive. So impossible to create a new partition table or to format it from this tool.

Verbatim pretends, citation:
http://www.verbatim.com/prod/usb-dri...pro-sku-96663/
...
All Privacy Zone data is encrypted with powerful hardware based 256-bit AES encryption to prevent unauthorized access.
...

Maybe this could explain why I have a hard time format the usb key.

Here are my other tries with some command line:

Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders, total 625142448 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xdfbadfba

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

I have had this similar experience also. Do not use gparteditor. Use the shell. What I did (it worked fine for me) were these steps: [just be careful which /dev/*** node is your usb storage]

Clean the storage:

Code:

~# dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sdc bs=1024
{you may change the node to whatever is found in yours: fdisk -l try it}

Partition the storage and make it bootable if desired:

Code:

~# cfdisk /dev/sdc
Format it using a gnu tool:

Code:

~# mksf.ext4 -j /dev/sdc
Tune up the rest configuration as desired:

Code:

~# tune2fs /dev/sdc
If you encounter mounting and read/write problems with it you can overcome them by creating a rule in udev. The latter can be easily done that way.

Refresh your self first by cursory re-reading the man pages of these commands before you begin:

man fdisk
man cfdisk
man dd
man mkfs or mk2fs or mkfs.ext4
man tune2fs

Hope that helps.

m.m.

Thanks for the reply.

The key as it is accessible within linux as:
Code:

system:/media/sdc1
On wich I could put some important files. However, I have got no way to get to know in what type of format are the partitions.

There is already a problem with the first step you propose:
Code:

root@porteus:~# dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sdc bs=1024
0+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes (0 B) copied, 0.00235079 s, 0.0 kB/s
root@porteus:

The usb key behaves as is there is no space on the key.

Then I try the second command line:
Code:

root@porteus:~# cfdisk /dev/sdc
...
FATAL ERROR: Cannot seek on disk drive
Press any key to exit cfdisk

Any other suggestion?

SOLUTION:

Googling a lot and finally a little more, Verbatim Store N' Go usb keys are made so that they could not be read by linux. Here is a citation from the following link:
http://www.ehow.com/facts_7615332_pr...sb-ubuntu.html

V-Safe

The Verbatim Store N' Go uses a partition and protection program called V-Safe; this allows you to create a protected partition on your USB drive that is only accessible using the V-Safe program. Because V-Safe is not built for Linux, a totally protected drive will be inaccessible; partition management programs are unable to read or modify the V-Safe partition.

So there is no solution other than returning the usb key to the vendor. ;)

It appears that the machine does not see the device. That could mean that there is a connection problem from the hardware level. Have you ascertained it the USB ports are enabled from the BIOS?

What returns with this command
Quote:

--# lspci -vv
(?)

We might be able to debug how the machine reacts/reads/identifies your USB device. Try these steps:

Code:

--# /sbin/udevadm monitor >> hotme.txt
{Wait for 8 seconds after issuing the command. Next, unplug the USB device; wait for another 8 seconds; then plug it again and wait for another 8 seconds.} Then issue --
Code:

--# cat ./hotme.txt
and paste the contents here.

From the reports in the hotme.txt we might be able to infer how to create udev rules and be able to employ a workable connection between that device and the machine.

(Sorry for the delay. I am also a busy (old)man :) But I always make it sure to use my free time for the benefit of others whatever I can within my limitations.

Good luck.

The machine in my opinion could see the device in some way, as I could put files on the usb. These files could be handled as much from the windows system than from a linux system. But maybe, I am not following you. I consider my computer knowledge somewhat limited.

Here are the outputs that you have asked:

root@porteus:~#

Step 1: This first command seems to be caught in a loop. It does not come back to the prompt by itself. And the file of hotme.txt is empty.
Code:

root@porteus:~# /sbin/udevadm monitor >> /root/Desktop/hotme.txt
step 2:
Code:

root@porteus:~# cat ./hotme.txt
cat: ./hotme.txt: No such file or directory
root@porteus:~# cat ./root/Desktop/hotme.txt
cat: ./root/Desktop/hotme.txt: No such file or directory
root@porteus:~#

Thanks for the interest that you have in solving the problem.

By the way, I was reading from my tight schedules :) I overlooked your post above it says:

Quote:

The key as it is accessible within linux as:
Code:
system:/media/sdc1
So there is no need to employ lspci or udevadm monitor.

If dd, cfdisk and gparted cannot read or change anything in your device that could mean it is hardware-locked.
