Question format an external scsi drive on linux

Hello everybody!
I recently added an external drive to my computer that was already running with linux... the drive is found but had already some data in it.
I don't know how to format the drive so can anyone help me?
I would also know how to have the drive filled up the next time I will upgrade the packages I have...
won't they go to the the /dev/hda and be directly put in the /dev/hdb for enough space missing?
Thanks for your help...

You format a SCSI the same as an IDE. SCSI device IDs are /dev/sdx.
Replace x with the actual device. See man pages for mkfs.

I really don't understand your second question but I think your asking about logical volume management or drive stripping. Search the web for additional info.
