Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Floppy protected in writing - Suse 10.1

Hi. I'm using SUSE in french, so I'll try to translate the message errors as best I can.

My floppy drive doesn't work. The error I get when I try to mount it is :

mount: périphérique de type bloc/dev/fd0 est protégé en écriture, on le monte en lecture seulement
mount: /dev/fd0: ne peut lire le super bloc

Which basically says that the peripheral of the type bloc/dev/fd0 is protected in writing. Mounting is read only.

mount : /dev/fd0 : can't read the "super" bloc.

Anyone has had a similar problem and know how to solve it?

Thanks.

Welcome to LQ. Make sure that the little "write protect" slider on the floppy is set to the "unlocked" position (meaning that writing is allowed.

Alternatively, what kind of data is on the floppy, and what exact mount command are you issuing? If the floppy is FAT32 you might try
Code:
mount -t vfat -o umask=000 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
which tells the system that the filesystem type is FAT32 and that you want to mount it with 777 permissions

They are formatted in FAT32. I tried the command you suggested, mnt/floppy does not exist. So I changed it to media/floppy (I use a french version) and the same error appeared (read only).

Help!
