Floppy Drive is not responding...........light is always on?????

The subject says it all.............I was going along fine then I turned the PC on in the morning and.........the floppy light has been on since. I checked to see if the cable had some how come loose but all connections are good. I lost it on the KDE "my computer" screen as a media device as well. The PC is a new build (2 weeks old) but I had the drive before. Now nothing. I was installing a new network adapter the day prior but I don't think I changed anything that would effect the floppy. But stranger things have happened. Any suggestions as to where to start troubleshooting??

Cheers,

That can happen if the data cable is connected the wrong way around.

Yes it can, Iwas reading that on another site. But that same site also indicates that it could be that the drive is dead. It is a recent purchase and worked for all that time before this light thing. when I vi /etc/fstab in suse 10.3 konsole I get the following:

/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

Would the drive be listed there if it was dead? When I try to mount it tells me the file type must be specified?

Cheers

Yes. /etc/fstab is a static file which doesn't get automatically updated once it has been created. There was a time when it did, with earlier versions of HAL, but that has long since changed.

Is there anyway to use konsole to test the drive? When I do "modprobe floppy" I get the window in KDE that pops up and tells me it found a new device but it stalls out and asks for file type.

What code would to help get through this?

Cheers

i would say the floppy cable is reversed

Agreed. Either that or the drive is dead.

Software can't help here.

I rechecked the cable with the power off this time and after reboot ............... everything was fine. I will have to remember to always shut the system down as suggested.

It is the simple things in life............

: )
