Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Firewire/iPod on iMac G4

Hey,

I am trying to get a iPod formated as an hfsplus to work with FC4 PPC. When I plug the iPod into the firewire port, it just charges up, it does not mount. I tried to mount /dev/sda but there is no such file in FC4. I'm running kernel v.2.6.11 and lspci gives this

Code:
00:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth/Pangea AGP
00:10.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 440 Go] (rev a3)
0001:10:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth/Pangea PCI
0001:10:17.0 Class ff00: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo/Pangea Mac I/O
0001:10:18.0 USB Controller: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo/Pangea USB
0001:10:19.0 USB Controller: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo/Pangea USB
0002:20:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth/Pangea Internal PCI
0002:20:0e.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth/Pangea FireWire (rev ff)
0002:20:0f.0 Ethernet controller: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth/Pangea GMAC (Sun GEM)
Any help on how to mount an iPod with firewire would be appreciated. USB is out because I don't have a USB cable for my iPod. Thanks!

I figured out the answer to this one myself. Just recompile the kernel with IEEE 1394 drivers (this probably comes with the default kernel as well) and add the following lines to /etc/rc.local

Code:
/sbin/modprobe raw1394
/sbin/modprobe ohci1394
/sbin/modprobe video1394
Then plug your iPod (or any firewire device) and it should automount.
