Figuring Our Freeze Issues

Occasionally my PC just freezes up. At one point I ran a fsck (realizes it would destroy everything) just to give it a shot. After that, I formatted and...

I figured it was not Linux after trying a couple different distros and trying out different kernels & kernel configs (using 2.4 just to be sure and 2.6).

I narrowed it down to my hard drives.

Are there any Linux utilities that I can use to analyze which hard drive, if I am correct, is causing the problem?

smartmontools. These use the internal Self-Monitoring and Reporting Tests (SMART) of the hard drives to assess drive health. Also look into badblocks.
