fglrx 8.28.18 Ubuntu no 3D Acceleration
Hello evryone.
Alright so I have recently switched to Ubuntu. I installed 8.25.18 via the unregistered repository or whatever. Everything worked fine. I had DRI working, I had OpenGl working and I had 3D acceleration. I was having a lot of problems with some games and decided to upgrade to 8.28.18 via this guide http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu..._.288.25.18.29 the intallation worked fine however I no longer have 3D acceration. I do, however, have DRI and OpenGL working, so my openGL games work mostly fine. any ideas as to what happened? Or how to fix this? Code:

:( anyone out there at least share the same problem? Last night I attempted to update to edgy just to see if it may fix anything... well it screwed over my system and could boot, so I spent all today reinstalling everything. But yeah, umm no go on the 3D accel still, it's a problem that I am able to reproduce. |

Thats what I did. Hense why I am able to reproduce the problem. OpenGL works great I get over 1000 FPS, but no 3D acceleration, and all my 3D screensavers run like crap now. I woul dhave stuck with the 8.25.18 drivers, but OpenGL ran like crap for somereason, and I was even unable to play Counter-Strike. Counter-Strike runs great now without 3D accel as does Quake III, but Source doesn't work neither does anything else I have tried that isn't based on those origional engines.

Anyone have any ideas or know where I can start? |

Anyone have any ideas or know where I can start? I just updated the kernel headers and kernel due to update, and set up the drivers with it. Same exact problem. |

Man I have bad luck with threads... :( |
UPDATE: Upgraded to 8.29.6 SAME EXACT ISSUE!

Attempting to install the ATI Proprietary Linux driver on distributions that have updated certain 3D components outside of the stock XOrg 6.8.2 may result in the driver not initializing 3D applications properly. Further details can be found in topic number 737-20868
737-20868: Linux Distibutions with modified XOrg X Servers may not be compatible with the 3D driver. The information in this article applies to the following configuration(s): * XOrg 6.8.2 * Linux Attempting to install the Driver on distributions that have updated certain 3D components outside of the stock XOrg 6.8.2 may result in the driver not initialising 3D applications properly. ATI Engineering has been advised of this issue and is investigating. Any updates will be published when they become available. Still trying to figure it out. Does Ubuntu have a modified Xorg server? I'm not using compiz or anything like that. Just want to know if this applys to me. and IF SO how do I fix it? |
Does anyone know if installing ATI drivers via repository modifies the Xorg server in a way that could cause 3D acceleration to not work?

I've the same issue

In fact, I have tried a lot of tutorials at Ubuntu forums without any luck. The result for fglrxinfo is: Code:
Error: unable to open display :0 Code:
direct rendering: Yes That's why I'm here asking the same question: is there a solution? Damn ATI drivers - how I miss NVidia cards. Those are the best, that's for sure... PS - I just notice. I have to update my signature. Those specs are no longer valid for the machine I own now. :( |
I upgraded to Edgy, removed all fglrx packages, and installed the included Edgy Drivers (from restricted repository) and I STILL HAVE the EXACT same problem. ANYONE ANY ONE A n Y o N e HELP!
It would be good to note that upgraded to Edgy installed Xorg 7.1 so from what I can tell that would be a clean xorg server, then installing drivers (8.28.18) should have worked. I have DRI support, but NO 3D acceleration. |
Well I made some progress, I realized that Cedega FULL was replacing (or adding) some library files. Before installing cedega the driver works great, after 3D accel is lost. I also found out that with some if not all ATI cards, cedega reports broken 3D accel even though its not. I am going to experiment with cedega small and see if I can come up with anything. I also wanted to say that I had SO many problems with the RC version of Ubuntu that I am going to install the release version from scratch, and if that doesnt work well I'm going back to 6.06 or back to slackware.

derrekito, your card works, believe it or not. When you do a "cat glxinfo | grep renderer" and it anything as the renderer other than "Mesa Indirect" then you're in business. My ATi Radeon x1900GT certainly has 3D acceleration (I get about 110-150 fps at 1600x1200 in the Cube3D/Sauerbraten shoot-em-up game) and its glxinfo renderer is as such:
