fedora, nvidia - scrambled screen


Hi,

i am using Fedora Core 2, GeForce2 MX/MX 400.
Kernel - 2.6.6.-274-8kstacks (from linuxant)
nVidia drivers from nvidia homepage (1.0.5336)

I ran nvidia installer from single user mode and it installed just fine (built kernel modules, did ldconfig, said everything's ok). I ran it again with --sanity switch, it confirmed that driver seems to be installed fine.

So, I edited Xorg.conf (nv -> nvidia, dri out, glx in, as in README), went multi-user, everything's went fine until X startup - screen blacked out, (monitor still shows 720x400@85 (textmode)), after several seconds I get a textmode screen with random characters. For several seconds there still is disk activity and pressing num-lock works, then it's all locked up (ctrl+backspace, ctrl+alt+f1, ctrl+alt+del fails, pressing numlock doesn't light up the led).

- here it apparently hangs
tried changing resolutions in Xorg.conf (1024x768, 800x600, 640x800 all the same), set bpp from 24 to 16, changed vsync,hsync intervals a bit more narrow, still nothing changes.

What's the problem, what am I doing wrong?

Have you tried running xorgconfig to change things around to default?
It looks like your nvidia driver installation went awry, and Vsync is out of wack.
